Ok, here's my page on music. Just a pile of stuff on how music has influenced my life and other things. But, specifically, this page is about my experience in forming a band and writing music, and there will be quite a bit of stuff on the Goo Goo Dolls, one of the best bands that has influenced me to go further with music. I'll also talk about my life as a musician, can't really classify myself as a professional though, hehe, but I will be in the future. You'll see, hehe. I'm gonna start off with everything on this page just to make it simpler and easier to gather all my stuff together. Well, here it is.

My Music Life

Hey, my name's Eugene. Unusual name for a guitarist, hehe, but it's all good! I started playing guitar in June of 2000. This was when I first bought a Yamaha acoustic guitar. After that I started taking lessons at a community college nearby, but unfortunately the instructor was more of a Spanish guitarist, so we played all these Spanish pieces. It was still cool though, since it helped me improve and get a good start. I also learnt from a book, which just taught notes on the strings, the first four simple chords, and simple songs with 3-4 notes. Yup, hecka beginner level!

I didn't really listen to music back then. The only bands I listened to were Green Day, and some of the Presidents of the United States of America (The Lump and Mach 5 guys). Then around the time I bought my acoustic, I heard the Goo Goo Dolls's Broadway. I started listening to them more and more and this gave major impacts in my life. I began to learn a bunch of their songs and got better and better at guitar. In February of 2001, I tried forming a band in sophomore year of high school, but unfortunately there was little success, so I just stopped with that.

Later, I finally bought an electric guitar. It was an Ibanez blue strat, which I'm still playing with today, since it rocks:) From there I learned solos, riffs, and just how to play faster. I'm still improving my skills with free online lessons. What would I do without 'em:) I've also written a bunch of songs and their guitar parts for a band I'll be trying to form in college. I'll talk about that later. So, that's where I've been going with my electric so far.

Ever since I bought my guitars I've listened to all sorts of rock. It's weird how different the groups that I listen to are, but I just like to respect all musicians and not look down on one over the other, you know. Here's just a list of groups that I like listening to:

  • Goo Goo Dolls
  • Five for Fighting
  • Hoobastank
  • Course of Nature
  • Sense Field
  • Nickelback
  • Default
  • 3 Doors Down
  • Creed
  • P.O.D.
  • Lifehouse
  • Incubus
  • The Calling
  • Third Eye Blind
  • Vertical Horizon

Songs I've Written So Far...and Counting

Yeah, I write a lot of songs...a lot, lol. I dunno, it's a way to express my feelings on paper when I just don't feel like journaling or reading the Bible! Therefore, I've written a few Christian songs, and other types so far, but many of them still need the guitar parts and melody. The common themes they all share are hope, love, fate, and escape. I try to use metaphors sometimes, paradoxes, assonance, just stuff that makes the meaning deeper so that I'm like "Wow, did I write that?!?" I won't tell you what they're about because I wanna leave them open to interpretation. A lot of you may still be able to figure out my true messages sometimes:) Anyways, the link's below! Enjoy!

Euge's Songs

My band...in the future...

As I said, I tried forming a band before, but it didn't work out. Right now, I'm in high school and I'm probably not gonna even try forming a band. If you're a high-schooler or past that, then you'll know why. You know SATS, AP courses, and all that tough stuff. Gotta take care of that first. So, I'm planning on forming a band in college. It's been a goal/dream of mine all these years, and it's been hard waiting until college. So if anyone's interested as well, simply e-mail me. I'll probably try to end up at UCLA or Berkeley, so if anyone is heading there for college, and wants to seriously start a band, e-mail me. I'm leaning towards a group that covers all forms of rock from Lifehouse to Nickelback. So both mellow, nicely sounding, mixed with a bit of harder rock, and of course, kinda Goo Goo Dolls style (Like their old songs and some new stuff)! Haha. And I'm still improving on guitar still. I use mostly power chords right now and I'm working on solos, so I don't expect too much from people who wanna join. We're gonna work together and improve as a group (That's what counts:) No swearing in the lyrics, since it's just not cool for me:) Well, hope some of you are interested! Just fill in the form below. Thanks!
