I. The First of Five

It has been quite a journey since the day I was drawn across the hills only to find out the true identity of myself. I still remember that day, where I discovered I was out of the ordinary, but within the extraordinary. Oh, those were the days where I faced many unbelievable encounters with Zan and the gang. I can’t believe they only had holo-projecting T.V. sets back then. I still keep one of ‘em neon green ones in my attic somewhere. Oh, right…back to my story! Well, those times with my crew were great fun, but also a life-threatening experiences at times. What was revealed to me one day was the beginning of my journeys and was hard for me to accept, but it was what was a part of me and of my true self. There, I came to be known as one of The Chosen…

It was 2604 back in my college days at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I wandered out of the silver, blue, and shiny building rampaging towards a nice, long, one-month summer vacation.

“Hey, Drake! C’mon, hop in! We’re cruisin’ towards Pop’s for some soda and grub! You comin’?” my college buddy, Leo asked me, driving his black, flame-lined hover wheels around the parking lot.

“Naw, you go on ahead! Have fun! I’m gonna repose at my block for the day! Catch ya, guys later!” I responded.

Leo drove away with some of his other buddies and a few girls. I could have sworn I heard him mumble to his pals, “Man, Drake is never any fun. What kinda stuff does he do for kicks?” As well, I wondered of this. Why was I not like them? How come I didn’t live the same life as other students around me? That was the day I received my answers.

I swept my spiked, brown hair back and walked down the black, tarmac sidewalk covered in fog, under hover-jets that glided above me. I felt confused, not knowing my direction, and randomly taking left and right turns toward my dorm. I didn’t even bother to look at my position locator, since I had no care for where I was going to turn up. Here, I was in deep, deep thought about my whole life and what lay ahead. I was down and there was hardly any solution to my problem. As I traveled down the winding path edged by green grass and brightened by capsule-covered snow, I realized I was deep within the campus, where maybe one or two students had previously wandered off. The area was dark, shrouded in mist and green trees swaying side to side by the cool breeze. I grabbed my blue, denim cloak out of my sack to keep myself warm, knowing that a huge storm was approaching. Leaves blew around my eyes and face, and I was ‘blinded’ by the strong gusts of wind. Therefore, I drew out my wind-resistant contacts and placed them on my pupils. The wind had grown too strong for me to stand, but I continued to pace forward. Suddenly, my foot slipped against a mud-covered rock and I collapsed faint on the short, jade grass, where no one would find me ever again.

“Mr. Finx. Mr. Finx, please wake up!” a voice fell over me.

“Uurrgh,” I groaned, “where am I?”

“Do not be afraid Mr. Finx,” the voice replied, “You are currently safe in our headquarters for the time being. You were lucky I spotted you almost being hunted and devoured by a pack of Teegrahs. I was the one who rescued you from being dinner for those beasts and let me tell you, you are one lucky man.”

“Teegrahs?!? Those animals don’t fear a thing and are the most vicious in the planet! Just doesn’t make sense you saved me from them!”

“Relax, boy. You have much, much to learn, for there are many things beyond our universe that you don’t even know about. Things will come clear and explainable once more is revealed to you. Now, let’s start off with a warm greeting and welcome. My name is Cidus Forthos and this is my present home, or headquarters, you might as well call it. I have been in this den for hmmm, about the last seventy-three years. Now don’t let this frighten you, but I am actually three hundred and eighty-five years old. It does not seem true, hmm? Well, there is far more you need to learn. Only The Chosen can exceed their limits…” Cidus explained.

I was confused at the moment and wondered why I was revealed to such bizarre information. This tall, light brown-haired man in shining shield-plates had entered my life all of a sudden. He stood about 6 feet tall with dark skin and a goat’s beard. I just didn’t believe that he lived to be three hundred and eighty-five years of age and onward.

“Hold on, scoot back a second here. None of this just made sense to me and can you please explain to me who the heck are The Chosen?” I said frustratingly.

“Hehe. You do have much to learn boy, but let me begin you with the basics. Our universe is made up with all types of unique human life forms. ‘Everyone’ has different personalities, but the same human characteristics. As I said, ‘everyone’. Now, tell me this. Do you think that all quadrillion humans in the universe have the same characteristics and abilities? Only the everyday sort believes that. No one has ever gone beyond our world… until this recent century. Years back, a group of lab scientists and myself discovered a unique life form that was human, but with abilities beyond the real world. Through serious diseases, scientific experiments, and lab accidents, these humans had been diagnosed with unthinkable powers and characteristics not from the everyday sort. They were known as The Chosen Five.” Bidicious described.

“Hmmm…so you’re telling me that somewhere around this universe, there are five life forms with superhuman abilities never imagined? Hoo geez, that’s weird to believe! So, I still don’t understand why I got so involved in this and how I ended up here,” I wondered.

The wise, old man all of a sudden yanked the bottom of my shirt up, revealing part of my back. What the heck was he doing?!? At first, I thought he had mental disabilities or somethin’, but after that, I realized the truth.

“Mm hmm. I knew it. I knew it,” he whispered to himself, “Has this scar-like, pale mark on the bottom of your back always been there since the day you were born by any chance?” he asked.

“Oh this thing. Hmmph, yup. It just never goes away. I think it’s a birth mark, or somethin’,” I replied.

“No, no. It’s no birthmark, I can tell you that. This mark is very rare in its kind and only five in the galaxy possess it… including you.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. This is crazy. You gotta be kiddin’ here! The Chosen… me? I’m just an outsider! I’m not even fit to be one! If I’m one of the five, then it’s like I’m not even human! Are you for real… sir?”

“Well, first point. I never said that The Chosen ones were not human. And second, being one of them is a very unique privilege for one; it’s a gift,” he explained.

I took a minute with myself. Blood rushed to my head as I began to think. Finally, my eyes widened, and I realized the solution of why I was different than society. I was one of the rare five in the universe, different than quadrillion.
