III. The New Girl

“Come back here! Get your lazy butts over there! Stop her!”

A group of gangsters were after me all over the streets of Kludios Hills, Neptune. Ever since I joined the group, I found myself to be a hunter; a spy; someone who just loved adventure. The time was 11: 47 P.M.N.E. and I was in a chase, for I was spotted eavesdropping on the local Neptunian Mafia. Unfortunately, my senses weren’t alert of my enemies behind me and I had to find a way to solve the situation. I approached a slide-door on my left and entered. The room was bright and partially empty, only with a desk and projectophone. I immediately locked the crease in the slide-door and proceeded to the machine. I checked my slide-pocket for my Directory Chip and inserted it into the phone. The video screen appeared and I scrolled down, selecting the I.D. Cidus Forthos. His holographic figure was projected.

“Master Cidus, get me out of here!” I requested. “Young one, you have to learn to use your powers wisely! Remember the seven psychic laws of matter,” my instructor answered.

“Yes, instructor. Goodbye,” I answered.

Hmm. Let me see. The seven laws, the seven laws. Telekinesis…mind-control…teleportation…Yes! That was it! The third law! I crouched down on one knee and shut my eyes gently. The sound of the banging doors disappeared from my ears as my molecules were scattered apart on a journey to the Central Headquarters…

“Rhea, you okay?” Zan, a partner of mine had asked, as I found myself back at the base.

“Yeah, I’m alright. The Neptunian Mafia was after me again, but I escaped as a whole,” I replied.

“Edyn, I see your abilities have increased by a great amount. But though teleporting is an effective skill, it does have its own risks involved. Every time you use this ability, you need to recharge your molecules for you will be very weak after the move. Your powers continue to strengthen as you use them, but you must be careful how far you teleport, especially from Pluto to Jupiter,” my master, Cidus told me.

“Yo, Rhea! You gonna need some rest. The room upstairs is empty so go ahead!” the sniper of our group told me.

A few minutes have passed and I am now sitting quietly in the room. Man, I gotta rest up soon cause of Bidicious’ orders. Cidus is my master, in case you didn’t know. Yup, he’s been training me for at least 10 years now along with my other friends at the base. Geez, I never knew how tiring, teleporting could be. It’s…like…(yawn)…

“C’mon Rhea! You’re dragging behind! It’s the last race of the season!”

“No…can’t! Too tired,” I replied to a teammate in the Katajuro College cross-country team.

It was the year 2606 back in my college days and I was a runner on the school’s team. I was exhausted, unlike my teammates, who had gone distances ahead of me. Alone I stood on the trail in the woods, the only one left behind out of 84 runners. I felt like an outcast, different from all the others. It was like I always did things uniquely from the world. I started jogging slower and slower until my calves began to swell. The sun shone with a powerful heat against me. I was collapsing harder as I ran further into the course. Suddenly, under too much fatigue I fell onto the dirt, not caring about the rest of my run.

“Edyn…Edyn…get up…run…you will make it…” a voice echoed.

I woke up to a bright environment of trees, dirt, and the sun. At that moment, I felt an extra charge of energy flowing through my body. I was tireless and I knew I could make it. I immediately lifted myself up and strided forward. What was happening? It was like my whole mind was doing all the work for me. I felt like I was floating or gliding across the surface of the ground. My race was back on and I was speeding unbelievably fast. Then in the near distance, a few runners dashed ahead. I would guess maybe 5 or 6. I don’t know how my mind could picture this, but it looked to me that they were jogging slowly compared to my run.

“Huh? It’s the last-place wonder from Katajuro! What’s going on? She’s passing us!” a girl told her friend.

“Who’s the last-place wonder now?” I countered as I sped past them.

10 minutes passed and the race was over. I came in 64th place out of 83, which wasn’t bad for how I started in the beginning. But what I didn’t understand was how I ended up this far? What happened back there? Where did that voice come from? I was probably dreaming back there. Maybe that’s what happened. No, but what about the tingly feeling in my mind concentrating on my running? Weird…

3 Hours Later

“Hello? Virginia, are you there?” I searched around in my dorm.

I guess my roommate wasn’t there or something. The floor was quite quiet, maybe only hearing one or two voices across the hall, since it was late at night. With nothing to do, I entered my room and lied onto my bed capsule with the fluorescent lights still on. My eyes would not shut and continued to stay open for minutes. I still continued to think harder about what really happened back at the track.

“You did well on the race today…”

“Who…who’s there! Get out of my room!” I shrieked.

“Don’t be afraid…”

“Why are you here?” I asked.

“You did not give up and I am proud of you. The powers are strong in you, Edyn,”

“You…it’s you! Who are you?”

“My name is Cidus. I noticed your unique characteristics throughout your life. Believe it or not, but back on that track, you did not fully run with all your energy. Your mind played an immense role in this as well,”

“What? So I didn’t really run this thing?”

“You did, but with the power of the mind. You see, the mind is the strongest source of intellect and energy. Without it, nothing here would exist, but empty-hearted, careless people. This is how powerful the mind is. It was the beginning of all that was made here in this room; the matters of solid, liquid, and gas make these items up. You think this is all the mind can do?” Cidus explained.

“Of course! You joking? What else can it create?!? Nothing!” I said, almost 100% sure.

“No. Do you think the mind is that simple? No. It can reach far beyond what the world thinks. Only few possess this kind of mind. A mind of power; a mind of extreme, high intellect; a mind of energy…
